Since when do conservatives think logically?

They are for law enforcement. So they are for government officials. So they want to pay for this service. But they are against taxes ("Taxes are a drag on the economy" they claim without explanation). So they don't want to pay for police. Yet they want law enforcement. So ...

Due to the current congressional committee structure, the spoils of congressional control are so great that party leaders would sell their grandmothers and first born to gain it.

In the current environment, power trumps principles and principles are used when they are helpful in gaining power but are compromised otherwise. Principles are bandied about as justification for partisan positions but seem ignored otherwise.

Conservatives want what everyone else wants from their president - leadership. Surely there is a compromise that can make both sides happy. I was hoping the President could insert himself into the situation that could demonstrate his ability to bring people together. Instead we get a civics lesson. Read William McGurn for a great example of how this can be done. http://bit.ly/cGqg5Y

"Isn’t that exactly what conservatives claim to want out of the President in other arenas?"

Absolutely! And it is sad and completely disheartening to listen to (once) fellow Republicans resort to xenophobia and pandering to politicize it. This nonsense is part of the reason that some of us have left the Republican party. It's certainly not that we're becoming liberal; we're becoming true Libertarians.

Absolutely. He reiterated what most conservatives already know to be true: the group has a right to build wherever the local authorities and private parties involved permit. We thank him for the Constitutional lesson; now if only he would abide by its multitude of other gov't restrictions. More importantly though, why is Obama inserting himself into local affairs at all? Leave New York decisions up to New Yorkers and restore a little dignity to the Presidency.
